Osteopathy for Pregnant Women
Pregnancy can be a very exciting, joyous time in your life. However, as the baby develops, it can put strain on your body.
If you are experiencing any discomfort, we recommend that you come in as early as possible. As your body changes and the heavier the baby gets, the more the pain will develop if it is not sorted out straight away.
Pelvic girdle pain
Groin pain
Round ligament pain
Lower back pain
In order to provide you with relief, we focus on relaxing the ligaments, reducing the tightness of the muscles surrounding the pelvis and improving your joint and spine mobility. Other issues that can arise during pregnancy include:
Common Pregnancy Pains
Some common complaints that we hear from our pregnant patients include:
Rib pain
Headaches
Back and neck pain
Carpal tunnel
If you’re experiencing any discomfort it can be treated using a range of gentle techniques. We can also explore other techniques like dry needling, adjustments and cupping. However, we will steer clear of your lower back and abdomen.
After we have resolved your initial complaint, we’ll be able to make a plan for regular maintenance treatments to keep the body moving well throughout the remainder of your pregnancy.
Birth Preparation Consults
HOW OSTEO CAN HELP WITH BIRTH PREPARATION.
During your treatment with our osteopaths, they will work on making sure the ligaments and fascia that influence your uterus and pelvis are working and moving optimally. These treatments are intended to create space within your pelvis, giving your baby the room to move freely into your pelvis.
We also educate on:
Pregnancy yoga practices to help create space
Perineal massage
Active birth positions
Relaxation techniques for the pelvic floor
Tips for minimising the risk of perineal tearing
Labour breathing techniques
Postnatal care of the perineal area
Breech births
These sessions involve the osteopath using external techniques to help relieve tension in the pelvic floor muscles. Even if you are not experiencing any discomfort, treatment can be beneficial any time throughout your pregnancy. Especially in your third trimester, it can help your body get ready for labour as it ensures the pelvis is aligned and all the muscles and ligaments around the pelvis are loosened and ready to open up for birth.
Osteopathy for Women
Some of the main complaints we see from women in particular include;
Post-partum issues such as pelvic pain, hip pain, after birth pain, breastfeeding issues, back and neck pain
Migraines and headaches
Symptoms of menopause
Menstrual pain
Endometriosis
Pelvic pain
Coccyx pain
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then a variety of techniques can be used. We can explore treatment options that target the viscera (organs in the body), nervous system, lymphatic system, musculoskeletal system as well as diet and lifestyle advice.
After an initial consultation and assessment, we may recommend extra tests and a follow up with your GP but this is decided on an individual basis. We will then formulate a treatment plan involving follow up treatments, what you can be doing at home and any other relevant lifestyle changes that you may benefit from.
What to expect at your first appointment
1. Talk about your medical history
For you to receive the best possible treatment, we first need to sit down and have a chat about the pain you’re experiencing and any previous injuries, illnesses or medications that could be contributing to your symptoms.
2. Undergo a physical assessment
After we have a good understanding about your concerns, we’ll assess any relevant joints, muscles and nerves around the area.
Depending on the extent of your complaint, we may need to perform other orthopaedic tests to reach a diagnosis.
3. Create a treatment plan
After your initial assessment, we will be able to have a discussion around your diagnosis, answer any of your questions and create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle. It is important to note that you may need frequent sessions over the course of your pregnancy to ensure you’re comfortable and ready for labour.
4. Start treatment
Depending on your diagnosis, this could include a range of different treatment options including:
Soft tissue massage
Dry needling
Cupping
Joint manipulation
Joint articulation
We carry belly pillows in our practice so you can lay on your stomach. However, if you feel more comfortable lying on your side, we can easily alter your treatment.
As we believe in treating you holistically, we may also provide you with some exercise and lifestyle advice. Making even small changes can assist with improving your symptoms.
Following your treatment plan, we will rebook your next treatment at a time convenient to you. At your next appointment we’ll be able to gauge your progress and how you’re feeling as well as continue your treatment.
Myofascial release
Stretching
Lymphatic drainage
Other gentler techniques where needed such as our pregnancy massage in Tweed Heads

Most people will need 3-4 weekly sessions to notice a significant change. Usually, patients start to feel better after 1-2 sessions. However, if the complaint is chronic, you may need more than the average number of sessions.
After your initial complaint has been resolved, we move you to a preventive treatment plan. We recommend that you pop-in for a visit every 4-6 weeks or when you feel it’s necessary.
